Cicadas 2024 Canada Ontario

Cicada Invasion Coming This Spring!

Double Brood Event to Happen Just South of Canada

This spring, two multi-species groups of cicadas known as broods will come out for their end-of-life bacchanalias in places where people like to go to hang out. This double brood event will happen just south of Canada with both 13-year and 17-year cicadas emerging simultaneously, which has not happened since 1803 when Thomas Jefferson was president.

The convergence of both 17-year and 13-year cicadas in the same year is an extraordinary rarity. While each brood has its specific geographic range, the overlap in 2024 has created a unique opportunity for a widespread cicada invasion.

Two Broods to Emerge in Over a Dozen States

The 13-year brood, Brood XIX, and the 17-year Brood XIII will emerge in over a dozen states. According to the website Cicada Mania, Brood XIX will be present in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Brood XIII will be present in Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Cicadas are harmless to humans and pets, but they can be a nuisance due to their loud singing and sheer numbers. If you live in an area where cicadas are expected to emerge this spring, be prepared for a noisy few weeks!

Canada is home to a range of periodical cicadas, but the species of cicadas found in Canada are annual. Species like Okanagana canadensis, known commonly as the Canadian cicada, emerge every year in late June or early July.
